The story of Montana cooperatives began on the dusty dangerous trails when families who were heading west joined together in wagon trains to help one another. By working together, they insured the safety and security of all.

Since the wagon trains, Montanans have learned that much can be accomplished by working together. The barn-building, quilting bees, and crop harvesting of the early days ensured that Montana was settled rapidly through cooperative action. Today, there is hardly a Montana resident whose life has not been benefited by the role of the cooperatives in our everyday life.

Our first schools came about through the cooperative effort. Rural areas have received electricity and telephones as the result of cooperatives. Electricity eliminated the windmill or the hand pump and it soon brought running water to the rural home. 

Today the cooperative spirit has spread far beyond these rural or agricultural levels. Avanta Federal Credit Union is a Montana financial cooperative, where citizens save together and pool their resources in loans that have built homes, purchased equipment for farmers, or financed someone's first car. The members of Avanta help each other, while helping themselves. Montana can be proud of its heritage of cooperative growth. Its future will remain bright as long as its people continue to hold sacred this spirit of our founding fathers.
